Wetlands Walk: “Fish of the Olentangy”

Step into the Olentangy River and discover the fish that call it home. Join experts from Ohio State’s Olentangy River Wetland Research Park for a hands-on look at how researchers capture, identify and study local fish, including the story of efforts to reintroduce the bluebreast darter to the Olentangy. Guests who want to get a little closer to the action can borrow waders and join us in the water. (Waders will be provided; simply select your shoe size when registering. Participation in the water is optional.)

Afterward, we’ll head back to Understory for a three of four course small-plate meal paired with a guided beer tasting.



  • Date: Sunday, October 18th

  • Time: 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

  • Itinerary:

    • 2:00–3:00 PM: Aperitif and arrival at Understory.

    • 3:00–3:15 PM: Walk together to the Wetlands.

    • 3:15–4:15 PM: Explore the fish of the Olentangy with Ohio State experts. See electrofishing and seining (techniques researchers use to safely capture and study fish) up close, encounter local river species and hear the story of the bluebreast darter's reintroduction. Guests may also borrow waders and join the team in the water.
    • 4:15–4:30 : Walk back to Understory.
    • 4:30–Beyond: Beer pairing with three or four small-plate courses.

  • Ticket Price: $50. Tickets are limited to 40 and the ticket includes:

    • A guided Wetlands Walk experience.

    • A 3 or 4 small-plate meal.

    • A 3-beer tasting flight (3 x 5 oz pours), led by Eric Butler (Wolf Ridge Brewing’s Head of Sales).

  • Location: The Understory Lounge (located on the ground level of 2571 Neil Ave.) From Understory, we will be walking to the Wetland Research Park. For folks who would like to drive there, the address is the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park (352 W Dodridge St, Columbus, OH 43202).

  • Parking: Parking at Understory and the Olentangy River Wetland Research Park are free. At Understory, it is first come first serve & shared with other businesses in the building. There is also ample free street parking around!
